Message from the Minister of Trade and Industry
It is my great pleasure to welcome ISO representatives to the 33rd ISO General Assembly 2010. This is certainly a historic moment, since it is the first time that the ISO General Assembly is held in Norway. The event is hosted by Standards Norway in Oslo. Situated between a fjord and large forests, the capital of Norway is ideal for nature lovers, but is also a modern city which can offer a wide range of cultural experiences.
For many years, the Norwegian Government has been an active supporter of national and international standardisation work. We see standardisation as important for a well functioning society. Standards also facilitate trade. This is not least important to a small, open economy like the Norwegian.
The General Assembly in Oslo provides an opportunity to discuss important standardisation issues. Notably, the new strategy for ISO is of core interest to ensure that ISO has the right focus in a changing world. The theme ‘IT@work’ which will be discussed during the open session of the General Assembly, is an example of an emerging issue which calls for a new approach.
I hope you will have interesting and fruitful discussions during the General Assembly 2010. I also hope that you will have a pleasant stay in Norway and that you will bring back good memories to your home countries.
Welcome to Oslo in September!
Mr Trond Giske
Minister of Trade and Industry
Greetings from the Mayor of Oslo
It is a pleasure to welcome you to the capital of Norway in September for the 33rd ISO General Assembly.
Oslo is situated at the end of the Oslo Fjord, in medieval times known as Viken (which means ‘the inlet’), from which the term Viking is derived. Although the town rose to prominence only after the Viking raids on foreign shores had subsided, it has a long and fascinating history. The ruins of medieval Oslo are well worth a visit, and so is the Viking Ship Museum.
Today Oslo is a vibrant, modern city with a knowledge-based economy and a rapidly growing population. We have excellent institutions for higher education, leading research institutes in many fields, and the main offices of internationally important corporations. These factors contribute to the high quality of life that we have here.
But arguably the most important factors are the city’s impressive cultural scene and its beautiful natural surroundings. Having concerts, museums, and restaurants as well as pristine nature close at hand makes life here enjoyable in many ways. Hopefully you will be able to experience some of what Oslo has to offer.
Oslo is honoured to be chosen as host for ISO's General Assembly. I am confident that the city will not disappoint you, and look forward to seeing you in City Hall.
Mr Fabian Stang
Mayor
