Coaching is increasing in prevalence as a service provided between supplier and customer. The purpose of the standards is to strengthen the level of competency of coaches. The standards are intended to contribute to a more professionally oriented industry.

NS 11251 Coaching services – Competency requirements is the main standard in a series of four.

The standard can serve as an aid for users of coaching services, coaches and schools that educate coaches. It describes basic competency areas for coaching, such as relational competence, communication, self-awareness, psychology, and ethics. The standard also describes delimitation with respect to other subject areas.

The standards have been developed by Standards Norway’s committee SN/K 258 Coaching.

After four years of work, the completion of all four standards is approaching. The main standard, NS 11251, sets minimum competency requirements, making it significantly easier for buyers of coaching services to understand what they can and should expect from potential providers. The standard will also form the basis for an upcoming certification scheme.

– We are very pleased to have a comprehensive standard for coaching in place. The client should know what to expect from a coach, both in terms of skills and competence. The work on the standards is pioneering, also internationally, says Paal Leveraas, leader of the committee.
